My recollections

My main recollections are of planning the trip .. in the days before e-mail came into general use!  I had to find out the phone numbers of all the huts and actually ring them to make bookings .. and suss out reasonable-cost accommodation in both Innsbruck and Munich.  This took quite some time, but at the end of the day it all went pretty smoothly.

The other recollection is of course the fact that Gwen was extremely unnerved by the fixed ropes and ladders on the exposed parts of the route .. firstly approaching the Bremer Hut, and then between there and the Nurnberger .. so the only solution was to descend to the valley and have a few tourist days in Neustift and Munich.

Three of us climbed the Habicht from the Innsbrucker Hut .. myself, Duncan and Mark.  We then continued to the Bremer, arriving quite late, as the others were almost finished their abendessen.  The climb and descent were in total clag .. was it worth it?  At the Bremer, we met another group which contained a Scottish Nuclear person ...?  They were quite intent on clearing the hut of its stock of schnapps ...?

The next morning was absolutely beautiful and I climbed the Aperer Feuerstein while some others continued to the main summit.  I returned to the Bremer then Gwen and I took the long traverse to the Nurnberger, where the very exposed parts of the route were taken inch by inch.

Next day I joined the group ascending the Wilder Freiger, then returned to the Nurnberger where Gwen had spent the day, and where we stayed for another night.

The next morning we descended to the Stubaital and caught the bus down to Neustift.  We found a comfortable hotel and booked in for four nights.  On the next day, we took the bus and gondola up to the Dresdner Hut to meet the group on their rest day .. but most had gone off for more ascents, and some had descended to Neustift!  We took the gondola up to the glacier, then returned to Neustift for some tourist days.

We returned to Munich the day before the others and got an extra night at the hostel I'd booked at the Englischer Garten.  Our final tourist day was spent sunbathing in the Garten.  The others arrived quite late and we all headed off for the final meal.

I learned a lot about organising a trip like this and had much assistance from Richard Charnock-Smith, whose command of the German language was invaluable.
